Thinking of Doing Your Own Wedding Flowers?

So you are considering DIYing your wedding flowers -- the first thing I would ask, “What is your motivation?

It looks easy! Anyone can do it.

Yes, maybe with training and enough time you could do your own wedding flowers. But, are you sure you want to undertake a task like this on the biggest day of your life? Where will you get your flowers? How will you handle them? What will you do if your flowers are all wilted?

A professional floral designer has vendors they know and trust from whom to order flowers. They are trained and experienced in processing and handling fresh flowers.

Flowers are so expensive!

Yes, they are. There is a lot of work that goes into getting beautiful blooms to you. Check out my blog, Why Are Flowers So Expensive? This will give you a detailed look into flower prices.

It will be so much fun to work on my flowers with my friends and family and will bring us all together.

Well, chances are your friends and family are good for maybe 1.5 corsages, then they will wander off to other activities. This will leave you and maybe one or two stalwart friends to do the rest of the flowers. It isn’t everyone’s “thing”. Even those of your friends who are “artsy” may find flowers are not in their wheelhouse.

I don’t need a lot of sleep.

Well, not needing a lot of sleep is a good thing if you are wanting to do your own wedding flowers. This job is backbreaking, sleep depriving work. You will spend many late nights working on your flowers. Your feet and back will ache as you are on them for countless hours, bending over a work table and hauling buckets of flowers. Your fingernails will turn an interesting brownish green color too.

I thrive on stress! Bring it on!!

You will have stress in spades. Your flowers may not cooperate. Friends will move-on to other activities. And it will take m-u-u-u-c-h longer than planned to do your flowers. All this in addition to the customary wedding stress. There will be no shortage of stress!

I don’t have anything to do the days preceding my wedding. I am going to be sooo bored!

There is so much to do in the days leading up to your wedding day. Trust me! You will not be bored. Some of you will have family or bridal party members coming in from out of town. Being able to spend time with them doing fun stuff (like parties, manicures and pedicures or a group scavenger hunt) will be more way more fun than stressing over your flowers.
